NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Dear Member,

The PMI Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Thursday 16 May 2019 at 7:00pm

We request that members arrive at 6:30pm, the meeting will commence promptly at 7:00pm. To avoid delays, RSVP either by phone (9510 3393) or online here at - this will also assist with catering. Upon arrival, please be prepared for a short queue as staff record your attendance.

As a member of the PMI, we encourage your attendance at the AGM. We wish for all of our members, as part of the PMI community, to have the opportunity to have their say in the future running of the PMI Victorian History Library.


After the AGM, Liz Porter, award-winning legal affairs journalist and author will be giving a talk on the history of the Victoria Police Forensic Science Centre which is the topic of her current PhD.

Liz is known for her prize-winning books about “the real CSI” - the way forensic science is used to solve crime.  Her latest book is Crime Scene Asia: when forensic evidence becomes the silent witness. She is also the author of Written on the Skin: an Australian forensic casebook, joint winner of the 2007 Ned Kelly award for the best true crime book, and Cold Case Files, winner of Sisters in Crime Australia 2012 Davitt award for best true crime book.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Agenda Items
An important item for the Agenda will be a discussion about a proposal to transfer the incorporation of the PMI from the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute Act 1899 to the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. Please note that this proposal is in its infancy and will require further consideration and discussion by the Committee and members after the AGM. This item has arisen from preliminary discussions with representatives from the Minister for Local Government and the Department of Local Government Victoria. Further information and opportunities to discuss will be made available at the AGM.

Voting
Every individual financial member of not less than three months’ standing, and every life member shall be entitled to one vote at general meetings of the Institute (Rules of the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute and Circulating Library No. 47.).

If your membership fees are more than 1 month in arrears, you are not considered a financial member of the PMI and will be ineligible to vote or nominate for Committee  (Rules of the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute and Circulating Library No. 10.)  If you are unsure as to your membership status, please login to the members area of our online catalogue at library.pmi.net.au and go to My Details. Alternatively, you can phone the library and speak to a staff member.

If your membership is due for renewal prior to 16 May 2019, and you wish to attend the AGM and vote, please ensure you have renewed your membership before the close of business on 16 May 2019. Please note the library will be closing early at 6:00pm on 16 May 2019. Library staff will not be available to assist with any library operations after 6:00pm.

Election of Committee Members
There is one position up for re-election. This position is currently held by the Treasurer.

Nomination for Committee
The Rules of the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute and Circulating Library 21. (a) and (b) state that nominations of candidates for election of members of the Committee must:
  • be made in writing, signed by two members of the Institute of at least three months’ standing and accompanied by the written consent of the candidate (which may be endorsed on the form of the nomination);
  • be delivered to the Secretary of the Institute by 4:30 pm on Thursday 9 May 2019.

In the case of there being multiple candidates nominated, an election will be held.
